Kp5 and the start of the aurora season in Churchill, Canada

July 17, 2023

Step’s Aurora Guide app shows 27-day aurora forecast based on data from SWPC

While the nights are still bright in northernmost aurora regions, in Churchill, Canada, the sun goes deep enough behind the horizon tonight for aurora to become visible in the sky. Yes, it's just for about an hour and still quite bright. But you can already see and photograph the northern lights at this level of darkness.

From now, the nights will become darker and longer every day, and in a week or two, Churchill will be 100% ready for the northern lights photography. As for other popular northern lights photography destinations, the season will start in one after another in the coming 1.5 month. Check when you can see the northern lights in the blog post Aurora season: when you can see the northern lights.

The Kp5 geomagnetic activity forecasted for tonight and the next night is an excellent season start. The forecast for the following weeks could be better. But keep an eye on the updates, as the sun can surprise you at any time now.

Let's see the updated 27-day forecast following Monday.
