The third calm week in a row and the fantastic one ahead

April 17, 2023

27-day aurora forecast based on data from SWPC

The latest geomagnetic activity forecast doesn't promise that the March 23/24 event will repeat this week on April 20-21. And we'll have a third relatively calm week in a row with a maximum of Kp4 on the weekend. But the following week's forecast is fantastic, with 4 days of geomagnetic storms in one week.

The northern lights season is over in the northernmost locations like Tromso in Norway and Kilpisjarvi in Finland. It will be over soon in Levi and Rovaniemi in Finland and Kiruna in Sweden. But next week should be excellent for regions like Iceland and Canada, where the northern lights season is not ending this week. The same is true for the year-round aurora regions.

As there is a new moon this week, it will not illuminate the landscape. At the same time, in northern regions, the sun produces the unique twilight glow in the sky in the middle of the night these days as it does not go deep enough behind the horizon. If you are in one of those northern regions, you can take amazing pictures of it. If the sky is clear, of course.

Let's see the updated 27-day forecast next Monday.
