Another surprise from the sun with Kp7 on Monday

May 08, 2023

Step’s Aurora Guide app shows 27-day aurora forecast based on data from SWPC

As the sun gets more active on the way to the solar maximum, it surprises us regularly. Isn't it great news for the aurora photographers? This time an unexpected geomagnetic storm hits the Earth right at the begging of the week with the maximum expected Kp7 level of geomagnetic activity. According to the latest 27-day forecast, the solar activity will fade but last until Friday.

While the aurora season is over in the most popular northern lights regions, this week can be a great end of the season in Whitehorse and the Faroe Islands. The first days of the week are also fantastic for aurora photography in the year-round aurora regions in the northern and southern hemispheres. Hopefully, you'll have a clear sky if you are in one of those regions.

The moon is still bright these days but sets earlier each day and will not illuminate the landscape properly in most locations.

Let's see the updated 27-day forecast following Monday.
